LASER SAFETY PROTOCOLS
Laser cutters are powerful industrial tools that present serious fire, eye, and fume hazards. Safety is not optional.
1. Eye Protection
Never operate the laser without appropriate safety glasses rated for your specific laser wavelength (OD6+ recommended).
- CO2: 10,600nm protection
- Diode: 450nm (blue) protection
- Fiber: 1064nm protection
2. Fire Hazard
Never leave the machine unattended while firing. A fire can start in seconds.
- Keep a CO2 fire extinguisher nearby
- Clean the crumb tray regularly
- Use air assist to reduce flare-ups
3. Ventilation
Laser cutting vaporizes material. Fumes can be toxic, carcinogenic, or corrosive.
- Vent outside or use heavy filtration
- Check airflow before every job
- Allow smoke to clear before opening lid
4. Prohibited Materials
Some materials release chlorine gas (deadly/corrosive) or cyanide when burned.
- NEVER CUT PVC or Vinyl
- Avoid artificial leather (unless laser safe)
- Avoid unknown plastics
Electrical Safety & Maintenance
High voltage power supplies (especially in CO2 lasers) can be lethal. Always discharge capacitors before servicing. Ensure your machine is properly grounded.
Regular maintenance prevents fires. Clean mirrors and lenses with optical cleaner. Grease rails. Check belts for tension. A well-maintained machine is a safer machine.
